My first attempt at blogging concerns my frustration with people who run for office who apparently have little regard or little awareness of what the US Constitution says. I would like to see each person, who runs for state government or US government office, to be required to take an exam on their understanding/knowledge of the U.S. Constitution. They would also be required to post that score of any campaign poster or flyer as a reminder to the public about who they are voting for. How many times do we have to ask ourselves if "they" (the elected offical) even understand how their voting agrees or disagrees with the Constitution? Their initial score could be upgraded by more study and retesting and if this actually took place, and consequently they could be held accountable for their increased awareness of what the Constitution supports compared to what they are supporting in government.
Frequenty, I mention to my clients, "you can't give something you don't possess to someone else!" This is true in parenting and I believe it has merit concerning politics as well. A legislator cannot provide Constitutionally sound legislation if they don't know the Constitution. Don't you think the legislation being tossed around presently has problems and is being rejected by most Americans because "it ain't Constitutionally sound?" For once, I would like legislators to be selected based on what they know and believe (inline with the U.S. Constitution) rather than for how much money they have or how attractive they are. I agree, they must be able to articulate their thoughts well.....but as we are seeing, looking and sounding good isn't a guarantee of anything but it seems to encourage sensationalism, hot air, and lies. Arrogance combined with entitlement gives you.....well, most of the politicians we have right now!!!! If I have to verify that I know something about what I'm doing because what I do affects the lives of others dramatically as a counselor, I think this should apply to our politicians as well. Let's get consistent and be accountable together.
